Located on the Western Algarve, Lagos is a popular destination for visitors from all over the world in summer and winter alike. Within the ancient city walls, all the old charm of old town Lagos is still evident with daytime providing many shops and restaurants to visit in the cobbled, pedestrianised town centre. By night the town transforms into a bustling cosmopolitan nightlife with many restaurants and bars. There is something for everyone - the restaurants offer anything from the best Portuguese and Algarve cuisine to Indian to Swiss and even Dutch food. The bars vary from the quiet lounge bars to the unusual to the plain outrageous - all open until the early hours of the morning! A ten minute walk and a short ferry ride later will get you to Meia Praia, a stunning beach in Lagos which offers sand under foot for miles and miles, various watersports activites including windsurfing, kayaking, banana rides, ringos and, of course wakeboarding (that's where we come in!)
Another ten minute walk and you can visit Marina de Lagos where you can take an array of boat trips from Dolphin watching to fishing. You can wakeboard from there (that's where we come in!), charter sailing boats and motor yachts (us too!), or take a lunch trip on an old traditional Portuguese sail boat.
By night the city of Lagos comes alive. The many restaurants offer an impressive array of cuisine choices at varying price points. The town's main streets are all pedestrianised and a walk around at night will help you to take in the atmosphere. For the night owls amongst us there's a huge choice of bars open until the early hours of the morning. After a hard days wakeboarding we'd definately recommend Joe's Garage (you'll need to ask someone) for your early drinking and then finish the night off in Zanzibar (on the main drag). The Lounge is a favourite haunt as a small chilled out bar with great music. Stevie Rays is worth a visit with the right music playing.
WHAT'S NEW FOR 2011?
In 2011 we've attempted to address the drawbacks of riding on the open sea! As we all know, waves and winds from the wrong direction can ruin days at a time and we'll be doing our best to address that this year. Check out our best location picks for 2011.
MEIA PRAIA, PONTA DE PIEDADE, PORTO DE MOS
Most of our wakeboarding in Lagos is done in Lagos the Meia Praia Bay. If the bay isn't the best place to ride that day, we'll venture around the Algarve coast a little to west towards Praia da Luz and use one of the secluded bays along the way.
It's no secret that the coastline around Lagos is some of the most picturesque in the Algarve so it's amazing just to hang out on the boat and look at the view! The best times to ride are morning or late afternoon as you generally find a thermal wind picks up around lunchtime and ruins it for us (good news for the windsurfers though!). If the sea conditions are too bad to ride in Lagos, we've a few other little secluded coves and hideaways nearby we can try.
If you've day (or half day) chartered one of our boats you can basically go and ride anywhere you like on the Algarve coast, weather and time permitting - you're the boss!
You can also do one of our charter packages or days out which offer a great way to enjoy the coast in comfort on one of our yachts and hop onto the awesome MasterCraft X-Star for some exercise whenever you like throughout the day. This is the life!
THE LAKE - SANTA CLARA
If you don't mind a little travelling, this year we'll be riding every now and again on Lake Santa Clara. It's a little drive back into the mountains from the Algarve but it's well worth a visit and a wakeboarders dream - a huge lake with lots of little alleyways. We pretty much have the lake to ourselves! For more information check out our 'Packages' section here.
THE RIVER - RIO ARADE
A little further around the coast to the east, is a tidal estury, the exit to the Arade river. When the tide conditions are right you'll find us riding in the river and in the shadow of the famous N125 suspension bridge that spans the river to link east and west Algarve at Portimao. A stunning location that offers beautiful flat water on the right day!
